Writing with a voice, with audience in mind and for a purpose is the most crucial change in the new English framework. Non-fiction labels and captions or narrative text - familiar settings.Retell and sequence. Describe the main character Sam or Jeremy. Write a list of rules for the bully Jeremy to follow. Write a letter to Sam advising him how to behave if someone is mis treating you or bullying you inside school, in the playground, or out of school. Link the story to Anti bullying week. Make a rosette from Jeremy to Sam as a good will gesture. The main characters (jeremy, sam, old lady, park keeper) can be made into stick puppets to role play the story successfully.

Year 2 Guided Reading This is a complete 5 week unit of work around the text Dinosaurs and all that Rubbish. It is suited to guided reading taught in a Reciprocal Reading approach. It is also useful to use to practice SATS style questions for Year 2 working at greater depth and within. Also adaptable for year 3. The story is linked to materials, science and rockets, and sustainable environmental issues. It is very suitable for boys because of the dinosaur theme. It is also a good book to use if you are doing a fossils unit or learning about climate change. The questions are written like the Paper SATs method, where there is a short text and then questions to answer below. The other included resources for each week, support additional activities that you may consider doing as a carousel during your guided reading independent work. Year 2 Writing Narrative Where the Wild Things Are Film and Book Exemplar text to introduce children to narrative writing - called Voyage and Return. Both the film and book are used simultaneously to learn about the main character and write a narrative. An excellent powerpoint with more than 15 slides demonstrates how to write descriptive scenes from the story, a narrative, character traits, and a success ladder. The exemplar text meets the requirements of English New Curriculum objectives. Explicit reference has been made to grammatical features including varying sentence types, conjunctions, words with suffixes, and the use of common exception words. Teachers may use the text in the imitation stage, innovate to where the main character meets a new wild thing, and then invent their own voyage and return narrative. An excellent film and text to use to promote boys writing.

Punctuation signs with corresponding bands for each band. Includes supporting vocabulary e.g when each punctuation should be used e.g commas in a list or apostrophe for possession or apostrophe for words with contracted form. This is an excellent visual and reminder for students and will support children to work at the expected band and at greater depth in KS1 and above. Excellent way of children self assessing and or editing. Can be easily adapted to suit all key stages. Very bright and engaging resource. Useful to be laminated and arranged to look like a pyramid. Band 2 Working below: full stop at the top of pyramid. Band 2 Working At: full stop, question mark, exclamation mark and apostrophe for contraction. Band 2 Greater Depth: as above including apostrophe for possession and commas in a list.

Into the Forest by Anthony Browne Year 2 Guided Reading This is a guided reading three week unit for children who are working at the expected level. This book is a great visual story to compliment any English journey linked to traditional stories or forest themes. There are clear planned questions that include literal, inference and evaluative questioning. There are also accompanying grammar and response activities included for all weeks to support a carousel activity format of teaching guided reading in class. This resources supports the new national curriculum for English and Reading in Year 2.

This resources is an excellent, differentiated, vibrant information booklet about jungle animals. The children can read the information text to find new and interesting facts about elephants, crocodiles, snakes, parrots and hippos. They can then make their own flap or pop up booklet with headings, captions and interesting facts about jungle animals and then read them to an audience. The text supports learning features of non-fiction text and demonstrates how to engage the reader with questions and interesting facts. This resources is differentiated for early readers working towards band 2 and fluent readers working at greater depth. The reading also supports writing non-fiction and using ambitious and technical vocabulary as well as grammar features (in particular questions). Writers working at greater depth can add their own exclamatory sentences about each animal. The text is presented interestingly and has clear text and visuals.

A set of handwriting and presentation rules in different styles. There are a set of rules outlined for children to support them with developing neat presentation and move on gradually to cursive handwriting. This is suitable from EYFS to end of KS1 and possibly even year 3 to ensure consistency and progression. There is a selection of handwriting fonts used, depending on if you use a precursive style or not, there should be something in here to suit the requirements of your school. The rules should be introduced early so that all the expectations are made clear. A reminder of application of these skills in English writing books is also useful on an ongoing basis to get well presented work. Must be displayed clearly around the classroom and ideally the rules should be written and practiced into books. This has been a very useful tool in a year 2 classroom to get children to use cursive writing most of the time and consistently.

Guided Reading Year 2. Whole class teaching and group discussion. This is as outstanding resource for you to use with your whole class. It has been cleverly organized and written so that all children can access the wonderful story. The resource is designed to be taught as a whole a class activity. The teacher supports reading of the text and children answer questions collaboratively, and learn from each others responses. Teachers are required to teach skimming and scanning techniques, read around the word, answer literal and clue questions, as well as evaluative summary questions. The resource has high expectations of all children and builds high level vocabulary. This will support you to show evidence of greater depth text. It s important to have class copies of text for group discussion.

Poetry for Year 2 focussing on grammar features including varied sentence types. Children can use visuals to support their learning to develop language to describe Christmas imagery. They then use the words to create a structured poem with a statement, exclamatory sentence with How…, a question, command and finally a statement that contains a simile. This will create a great opportunity for children to engage with poetry, learn, perform and enjoy. The lesson matches the demands of the new English curriculum for 2014 for written and spoken language. Although this is a seasonal poem, it can be used as a starting to point to change and innovate to any topic of choice. The structure would still apply to any chosen subject e.g. animals or seasons. Year 1 and 2 SPAG. The all important suffix endings display for the grammar washing line in the classroom. This is a very eye-catching and visual way to display all the suffixes that the children need to be able to spell and use accurately in their writing to secure working at the expected standard. The suffixes are written in bubble writing and have the common suffix ending words written inside them. They will make an excellent and immediate display. It is suitable for classes from year 1 to year 3. It currently stands proudly on display in all our KS1 class rooms. The bubble writing suffix’s available are - ment, -ed, -ly, -ing, ness, -er, est, er, less. Year 2 English Grammar Expectations within writing An excellent classroom Grammar display for pupils to access throughout their lessons in English. Can be used on teacher’s working wall or on the washing line. The resource supports learning grammar terminology and gives clear examples about the meaning of terminology. There are also examples given in context e.g how to use co-ordinating conjunctions in a sentence that has two independent clauses. Ideally each page should be blown up to A3 size so it is visible to all children. It can also be reduced to have a set on each table for the children to have easy access to. The grammar washing line supports children to edit and evaluate their own work which is part of the standards.

A fantastic Great Fire of London Guided Reading Information Text Unit. This unit supports comprehension of children working at the expected level as well as greater depth in year 2. Children will have the opportunity to read short extracts and answer retrieval, looking and inference questions. They are also required to summarize the text in their own words. More able readers are expected to read at greater length - which are leaflet style texts and separate questions. Following how the fire started, the children learn more about the Duke (future King Charles II) and learn about his bravery to help out in the fire. Finally they learn about the Monument to understand how we remember historical events from the past. They also follow through to finding out about a famous person from the past - Sir Christopher Wren (who designed many churches and buildings to help re-build the fire). This is a superb unit that can be used alongside the science planning for GFOL and inquire about how to make the best secret ink for Samuel Pepys to write a message to King Charles. Year 2 Reading and Writing- poetry New English Curriculum This fabulous resources has an array of classic poetry with comprehensions. The sound collector has differentiated comprehension for higher ability (working at greater depth) and then differentiated down so that all the class can access and enjoy classic poetry. Children answer literal, inference and evaluative questions about the poem. After that , they spend a day creating their own verses using similar pattern structures. There are also other many fun and enjoyable poems to learn and perform by Roger McGough, and Valerie Bloom- such as The River, and other sound poems. Children can recite these, perform them and offer opinions about them. Children will learn how to identify rhyming words and generate their own. They will understand language techniques used by the poet and create their own verse. This resource can also be used as a poetry unit during English main teaching or guided reading. It will be good evidence for greater depth reading and writing. Thank you in advance for choosing this resource. This is a comprehensive list of words with contractions that can be used for classroom display. They in large print and categorised into word families for easy identification around the classroom. This is a useful display for children as they are no longer allowed to be given too much spelling support from the teacher. There are a couple of poems to embed the contracted words that children could use to learn poetry for pleasure. I have found this a invaluable aid to teach spelling to reach the expected standards in English. Suitable for the new curriculum. I hope you found this resource useful as I haven't found anything appropriate for contracted words as yet. I didn't want any more banners and flags in the room. The words are very large but could be made more accessible if photocopied on to A3.
